The religiousness gap: A developmental sequence.
A presentation by dr. Piet/Peter Verhagen
organised by the WPA Section on Religion, Spirituality and Psychiatry
In this presentation, Dr Peter J Verhagen will outline the development of the field of psychiatry and religion since the 1980s. As an analytical tool, he will use what Tuckman (1965) calls the stages of forming, storming, norming, and performing (respectively, the preparatory, polemical, regulatory, and constructive cooperation phases). In doing so, "we will not only discover that there really was a productive development, but we will also gain insight into how that development occurred. This will give us tools for how to proceed".
Participants will gain knowledge:
- About the concept of the "religiosity gap";
- About the concept of the "religiosity gap" as a common thread in the recent history of psychiatry and religion;
- About the conflicts and solutions surrounding the “religiosity gap” and how they came to be;
- About the “religiosity gap” and how to move forward.
